What is mental health?

Mental health can be defined as being about how we think, feel and act. Just like physical health: everybody has it and we need to take care of it.

Our mental health is on a spectrum that can range from good to poor.

Good mental health can help you to think positively, feel confident and act calmly.

If you have poor mental health, you might find that the way you're thinking, feeling, or acting becomes difficult to cope with. You might not enjoy things you used to like doing. You might feel sad or angry for a longer time than usual, or you might feel like you can’t control how you feel or behave.

At Eggar’s there are many places that you can go for support for your Mental Health: your tutor, a favourite teacher or member of staff, Progress Leader or Student Services. It is important to share how you feel and staff in school will not judge you.

Feeling sad or anxious does not necessarily mean that you need to worry about your mental health – these feelings are perfectly natural and a part of being a rounded person. If you are having a bad day here are some suggestions for things that might take your mind off it and cheer you up:

  • Read
  • Colour
  • Draw
  • Exercise
  • Take a bath
  • Talk to friends or family
  • Bake
  • Listen to music

If you feel sad or anxious for a long period of time it is a good idea to talk to someone about this. We can all suffer with mental health during parts of our lives.
