Powers and Responsibilities
Governors are responsible for:
- Determining, monitoring and evaluating the aims and objectives, policies and plans and procedures within which the school operates.
- The development and implementation of the school’s strategic plan.
- Ensuring the requirements of the National Curriculum are met.
- The financial management of the school’s delegated budget, the Specialist school budget and any other income.
- Maintaining a safe working environment for staff and pupils.
- Ensuring staff have a reasonable workload
- Deciding the extent of delegation of their powers to committees and the headteacher.

- Governors work in partnership with school staff, parents and LEA
- All governors have equal status
- Governors have a duty to act fairly and without prejudice at all times
- Governors should recognise laws and good practices relating to the employment of staff

- Governors should exercise the highest degree of prudence when discussing potentially contentious issues outside the governing body
- Governors should observe complete confidentiality when asked to do so by the governing body, especially in matters relating to individual staff or pupils

- Governors should be prepared to give a significant amount of time and energy
- All governors should accept a fair share of responsibilities
- Regular attendance at meetings and training sessions/courses is essential

- Governors should always act as a corporate body. Governors should express views openly at a meeting but accept collective responsibility for all decisions
- Governors should only speak on behalf of the governing body when asked to do so
- All visits to the school should follow the framework agreed by the headteacher and governing body
- In responding to criticism or complaints relating to the school, governors should follow procedures established by the governing body.
- Governors have a responsibility to maintain and develop the ethos and reputation of the school
