Training

We believe that if governors are to be effective they should keep up-to-date by attending relevant courses and briefings.

New governors are expected to attend an Induction Course and any training that will help them to understand the work of their committee. Experienced governors should attend at least 1 training session a year, in addition to a whole governing body session.

Hampshire Governor Services is responsible for ensuring on-going support and assistance to all governors.

A training programme is organised and published by the Local Governor Services Co-ordinators. Governors are entitled to training in relation to their duties and responsibilities. This provides a valuable insight into the work of a school governor.

We would encourage you to take advantage of all relevant training, especially when you first join as a governor.

You can book a course at any time, either by ‘phone or online or ask our Training Liaison Governor to book it for you. We pay a yearly fee (known as “full access”) which covers all our training costs. This means that governors can attend as many courses run by Hampshire Governor Services as they wish.

Each year we have a whole governing body training session, usually held at the school. We plan this well in advance, choosing our own topic for the training, and it is delivered by a member of the Governor Services team or one of their consultants.
