A celebration of Success in adding value in student achievement

Eggar’s was recently identified as one of the top 100 specialist schools or academies with a 10 point or higher value added score in the 2007 GCSE examinations. We are extremely pleased and proud to be nationally recognized for the academic progress by our pupils and believe this reflects the hard work of teachers, pupils and parents over the last academic year

Eggar’s identified as a High Performing Specialist School

In April 2008, Eggar’s School was identified as a high performing specialist school and as a result we were offered a second specialism. Our second specialism is Training School. Training Schools demonstrate excellent practice across the range of teacher training activities, especially in initial teacher training and the continuing training of the whole school workforce. They are ambitious, imaginative and influential in these areas. They work collaboratively with others for the benefit of staff and pupils beyond their own boundaries. As a Training School, we will seek to innovate and develop in a number of key areas including whole staff training, CPD for teachers, leadership training research and teacher training. Developments will focus on and have impact on teaching and learning across the school.

Exam period

As we approach the last half term our thoughts are once again with students who have been sitting public examinations. At the start of the month, year 9 students completed their end of key stage 3 tests. The first taste of a large scale examination in the sports hall can be a daunting one (many of us remember it well!), but teachers and invigilators were all impressed with the calm and efficient way in which the students conducted themselves. With SATs out of the way we have then moved almost seamlessly on to the programme of GCSE examinations for students in year 11. Naturally this is a tense time for both them and their families, but we trust that the careful preparations they have undertaken with their teachers is enabling them to enter the exam room feeling confident and relatively relaxed. We wish them all well.

Year 11 Final arrangements

The exam booklet, timetable and presentations about the Year 11’s final arrangements can be accessed on the website directly or by following ‘Information for parents and pupils’ and then ‘Year 11′.

Newsletters

In the last couple of days we put the school newsletters online so you can download and read them at your leisure. They are large files and can take a while to download so please be patient if you choose to view them this way. The latest newsletters can be accessed on the home page of our website whilst the full list can be found at http://www.eggars.net/parents/all-years/newsletters.

School fete

Friday 13th June was our non-uniform day in aid of collecting prizes and items for the raffle, tombola and china smash. The school and the PSA would like to say a big thank you to all the parents and pupils for their support for the event and for bringing in a great variety of items. The fete itself takes place this Saturday, 21st June, from 1pm to 4pm. There will be lots happening on the day including pupil fun stalls, a BBQ, live music from the Big Band and local artists, a licensed bar, and a cricket match to name a few.

We look forard to seeing you at the Fete, where all proceeds will go to the PSA and in turn help support school events and the purchase of new equipment.

Parents Survey

Every two years we like to find out how we’re doing by sending out a questionnaire to all of our current parents. Historically this was sent out as a paper survey but this year we wanted to try an online version. The survey takes no more than 10 minutes to complete and your answers are anonymous. This is your chance to let us know how we are doing and to help us identify the areas where we need to improve.

To access the survey please follow the link to our survey monkey questionnaire.

Tesco and Sainsbury Vouchers

Please have a look around for any vouchers from Tesco Computers for Schools or Sainsbury’s Active Kids that you may still have at home. Tesco Computers for Schools require the school to spend or bank all of their vouchers by 4th July 2008. Similarly the Sainsbury’s Active Kids scheme asks the school to spend all vouchers by the 25th July 2008.

So we can count and all vouchers in time please can we ask you to make sure any vouchers you have at home are handed in to the school the week before the deadlines above. Thank you.

Website News

Many of you will have noticed the school website has been developing over the last couple of weeks. We have worked on the look to make it more school friendly and easier to use. We have also been developing the content areas by adding newsletter archives and ‘in this section’ menus. We are making enhancements and adding new content to the website on a daily basis. In a couple of days there will be a website blog which will keep you informed of the changes we have made, and the work we are doing.

This year the evening with Big Band takes place at 7.30pm on Friday 27th June. Tickets are £5 each and can be reserved at the school office. There will be a licensed bar and guests are invited to being a picnic style hamper to enjoy while the Big Band plays.
